Abstract

This study aims to analyze educational justice from the perspective of John Rawls and critically examine it in light of the philosophical thought of Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi, with the purpose of developing a theoretical framework for Iran’s education system. The study adopts a qualitative research approach based on content analysis and philosophical-critical analysis of texts. Accordingly, the fundamental principles of Rawls’s theory of justice—including equal basic liberties, fair equality of opportunity, and the difference principle—were identified, and their educational implications were examined. Subsequently, drawing on the anthropological and teleological foundations of Mesbah-Yazdi’s thought, several critical considerations were examined, including the incompatibility of liberal philosophical foundations with an Islamic worldview, the inadequacy of value neutrality for cultivating a morally and spiritually elevated human being, the neglect of spiritual purposes in Rawlsian education, and the diminished role of religion within the family. The findings indicate that educational justice within an Islamic framework requires more than equal educational opportunities; it also entails moral guidance, the strengthening of religious identity, and due consideration of differences in human abilities and talents. On this basis, the proposed theoretical framework is structured around four principal dimensions: ensuring equal educational opportunities, promoting value-oriented education, fostering merit and human capacities in accordance with individual potential, and addressing inequalities through multidimensional compensatory measures. The findings further suggest that integrating the strengths of Rawls’s theory with the anthropological and teleological foundations of Mesbah-Yazdi’s thought may provide a contextually grounded and potentially effective framework for Iran’s education system. Such a framework simultaneously addresses social justice, quality of learning, and spiritual development, thereby contributing to the cultivation of cultural identity, social cohesion, and sustainable development.
