Abstract

The present study aims to identify the Qur’anic discursive strategies for reform and to develop a structural model for transforming the customary norms of the pre-Islamic
era (Jahiliyyah) into Islamic norms. It examines the discursive strategies proposed and employed by the Qur’an, as a guidance framework for humanity, to transform the gender-based worldview of the Jahiliyyah. More specifically, the study seeks to identify the components involved in the transition from a male-centered discourse to a monotheistic discourse, while considering the constitutive nature of Qur’anic language and the underlying rationales of the male-centered discourse. The gender-biased culture of the Jahiliyyah was not transformed or widely accepted merely through the issuance of several ethical and jurisprudential injunctions. Rather, the Qur’an created the necessary conditions for the internalization of divine values in opposition to gender-based foundations in a systematic and effective manner, thereby shifting the criteria of value from gender-based superiority toward the establishment of monotheistic norms. Accordingly, value criteria in individual and social life shifted from gender-biased considerations toward criteria based on piety (taqwa). The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology, focusing on Qur’anic verses as well as a cultural and sociological analysis of sources concerning women during the period of revelation. Although the Qur’an narrates propositions within a predominantly male-centered social context, reflecting the prominent presence of men in the public sphere, its discourse simultaneously operates in a manner that enables its male-oriented audience at the time of revelation to derive a realistic understanding from these narratives while, at the same time, facilitating a discursive transformation from gender-based concepts toward transcendent concepts through the establishment of a God-centered orientation. This transformation is neither patriarchal nor matriarchal; rather, it constitutes a discourse centered on the monotheistic human being. The resulting conceptual model comprises six components of socialization and five components of social participation/social integration, directing the gender-superiority-based discourse of the Jahiliyyah toward a transgender, God-centered monotheistic discourse.
